The Shape of Dissent
The Chamber Dance Company's 21st season showcases the work of choreographers intent on provoking social change and embracing a humanistic, pluralistic society. The concert opens with a suite of dances created by artists associated with the New Dance Group. Founded in the 1930s this group of artists was committed to making dances that could be understood and appreciated by the common man, and addressed timely social issues such as oppression, inequality and prejudice. Jane Dudley's "Harmonica Breakdown" reflects on the tragic effects of the Oklahoma dustbowl, Eve Gentry's "Tenant of the Street" delves into the layered issues of homelessness, Charles Weidman's "Lynchtown" studies the horrors of mass hysteria, and Donald McKayle's "Dink's Blues" conjures the dreams of chain gang members. The evening closes with "D-Man in the Waters" by Bill T. Jones.
