Black Grace
“A vivid tapestry of sophisticated rhythmic layering... mesmerizingly gorgeous.” Boston Globe
The break-away hit when they appeared at Jacob’s Pillow, this New Zealand-based, all-male troupe rocks the house with thundering stomps, body percussion in syncopated rhythms, and flying acrobatics. Choreographer/founder Neil Ieremia fuses traditional Samoan and Maori dance with contemporary movement and music. In one of the company’s signature pieces, Minori, for example, the dancers preface a vibrant slap dance with an old Samoan nursery rhyme that gradually morphs into a Sesame Street counting song. Come expecting works that are fresh, surprising, and thoroughly captivating.
